My rating: 1 of 5 stars
I heard many many great things about this book before I started reading it. There is also a praise on its cover saing that it is one of the best fantasy books. I mean, seriously? How can anyone say something like that having on mind how many amazing fantasy stories there are? You can call it ‘the best fantasy read’ only if it is the only fantasy book you’ve ever read!
Assasins. Cliché! I’ve read many, many books about assasins. Should I start listing them? No problem. Farseer trilogy by Robin Hobb. The Night Angel trilogy by Brent Weeks. The First Law by Joe Abercrombie. Grave Mercy by Robin LaFevers. Many, many more.
Why do writers have a need to make stories about assasins? I have no idea. Maybe they want to avoid clichés ( for example, books where the main characters are royal). Why wouldn’t a lonely assasin (who maybe has a good heart, but doesn’t know that and only has to find out) be a main character?
The other thing I didn’t like about this book is that it has no real depth. The main heroine is the kingdom’s greatest assasin. Okay. But, we don’t know how she ended being named the greatest assasin. We do know something about her past, but, in my oppinion it’s not nearly enough.
When she comes to the palace, she gets a huge room, a lot of dresses and even a servant! Handsome prince can’t take his eyes off her. Great! Have I mentioned that she loves to read books? And, yes, she is a great musician.
She enters the competition and, of course, she is the best.
Fancy dresses, huge parties… Have I told you yet that captain of the guard also has feelings for our dear assasin girl? Well, now you know.
If you have nothing smarter to do, read this book. If you are a writer and you’d like to know what you should avoid in order to make a great story, read this book.
